What is this program?
n8n is an automation platform that creates workflows by starting from a trigger (e.g., webhook, schedule) and connecting multiple nodes. It can connect SaaS, databases, messengers, and AI models through more than 400 integration nodes, and you can also use JavaScript and Python code nodes when needed.
Self-hosting is its strength. If you deploy it on your own server with Docker, data does not leave your environment and you can connect directly to internal systems. It also provides nodes for AI agents and RAG pipelines.
What problems does it solve?
- Situations where you need to automate repetitive workflows between multiple SaaS and internal systems
- Situations where you need to reduce the cost and data leakage concerns of cloud automation tools such as Zapier
- Situations where you need to integrate AI models into existing workflows
Key features
Trigger-based execution
Start workflows with webhooks, schedules, and app events.
- Use case: Event-driven automation
- What you get: Automatic execution of real-time and scheduled tasks
- Limitations: Requires resource planning based on trigger frequency
Node ecosystem
400+ integration nodes and code nodes
- Use case: Connecting SaaS, databases, and APIs
- What you get: Immediate integration by adding nodes
- Limitations: Some services require authentication setup
AI workflows
AI agent, vector store, and model invocation nodes
- Use case: Building AI automation pipelines
- What you get: Connect GPT, Claude, and local models
- Limitations: Watch token costs and design quality
Self-hosting
Deploy to your own infrastructure with Docker and npm
- Use case: Securing data sovereignty
- What you get: Direct connection to internal network services
- Limitations: Requires update and backup operations
Installation and execution
Docker (officially recommended)
Run with the official container image.
docker run -d --name n8n -p 5678:5678 -v n8n_data:/home/node/.n8n docker.n8n.io/n8nio/n8n
npm
Install globally in a Node.js environment and run.
npm install n8n -g && n8n start
Docker Compose
Manage data volumes and environment variables with a Compose configuration.
docker compose up -d
Practical usage examples
Accessing the web console
Use the workflow editor on the default port 5678.
http://localhost:5678
Creating a workflow
Start from a trigger node and connect action nodes.
Example: Schedule Trigger → HTTP Request → Slack
Managing credentials
Register API keys and OAuth in Credentials and connect them to nodes.

Advantages and limitations
Advantages
- Self-hosting gives you data sovereignty and cost control
- Node-based visual editing plus code node flexibility
- Supports various triggers such as AI, webhooks, and schedules
- Community Edition is available for free
Things to consider before use
- The license is not fully open source (check commercial restrictions)
- As workflows grow, debugging and version control become burdensome
- Self-hosting requires update and backup operations
Comparison with similar programs
| Program | Features | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|
| Zapier | Fully managed cloud automation | Quick start without management burden |
| Make | Visual workflow automation SaaS | Visual editing for complex scenarios |
| Apache NiFi | Large-scale data flow-centric automation | Large-scale data pipeline operations |
