I Push the Right Door — This Question Is a Fraud That Prices Time in Currency
I doubt the framing itself. "A billion won versus 500,000 won" is presented in units of currency, but what actually changes hands is time and self-determination. The moment two different goods are weighed on the same scale, the answer is already distorted. I take the right door, freedom.
1. What the Pro Side's Compound-Interest Math Leaves Out
The "three percent a year, 2.5 million a month" calculation omits four things: inflation, taxes, mortality risk, and the health toll of ten years in prison.
A billion won's purchasing power is not a billion won ten years later. On top of that, prison life brings chronic illness and mental-health risk. The 2.5 million a month goes to hospital bills long before it goes to travel or investment.
Above all, the person in their early thirties who goes in and the person in their forties who comes out are not the same person. That calculation treats a human being as a constant. A human being is not a constant. Body, relationships, and chances all lose interest during those ten years.
2. A Question for the Side That Talked About the "Right to Refuse"
The left-door side said a billion won is "the right to refuse." But to win that right, they surrender every right to refuse for ten years. Prison is a place where you cannot refuse anything, twenty-four hours a day, even while asleep.
To gain a partial right to refuse for sixty years, they pay with a complete surrender for ten. However good the interest rate, the principal must never be a person.
3. What Can Be Undone and What Cannot
Money can be undone. You earn it, lose it, earn it again. Time cannot be undone. And time's value is not uniform. One year at twenty and one year at seventy are not the same.
Those who called the ten years "a stretch whose present value is low" saw a life only as a discount rate. First experiences, first failures, the years while your parents are still healthy — these are not things to discount but things that disappear when discounted. Later, the same money cannot buy them back.
Money is not the price tag of a life but its tool. Sell the life to buy the tool, and all that remains is the tool.
